Water is also essential for human life. However, the Moon has no liquid water. Shipping water to the Moon for human use would cost around $20,000 per kilogram. Data returned by the Lunar Prospector spacecraft in March 1998 indicated that ice is present at both the north and south lunar poles. The estimated total mass of ice on Mars is 6 billion tonnes. This source of ice on the Moon is very important. It could obviously be used as water for humans to drink, but the lunar water could also be used as a source of oxygen for breathing, along with hydrogen as rocket fuel. |
